Fished Trevor Pier again this weekend, my other half wants to catch a decent sized huss and this is the best location I am aware of.
Fishing from just before dark (10.00) there were the usual reams of doggies (with many bites proving fruitless). We figured this was down to the very small doggies not able to take our massive squid/sandeel baits. This was confirmed when Karen landed the smallest doggie I have ever seen at about 10 inches.
Mid way thru the night tap tap on the rod after I had cast in only 30 seconds earlier. Pick rod up reel in slack then tap tap again and strike. Started reeling and knew it was a better fish. Result reasonable Huss at 40" (estimate weight at 8lb?). Not as big as some I've caught on there but beats the constant string of doggies.
Karen was a bit miffed but got stuck in and stuck her spinning rod out with the same pennel rig and squid/sandeel combination.
More doggies kept coming, then a tussle with a bloody spider crab, albeit a little one this time.
Then Karen had another bite on her spinning rod, typical doggie bite, she struck in and started reeling which proved quite difficult, looked down over the pier as whatever was on her hook was causing a fair bit of resistance. Result... not a doggie but .....
She was pretty chuffed and Ive gotta say Ive never seen one pulled out at Trevor before. Carried on thru until the morning and did a little spinning for mackerel (2 for the pan on white feathers).
I then had a first ever go at float fishing. Pretty cool had a good hour with half a dozen small wrasse, several small pollock and another Mackerel for the pan.
Overall a bloody good session.
p.s. can anyone estimate the size of the eel? I aint got a clue and think I'll invest in some scales for our next trip.
Regards
Nic
