Hi guys, has anyone tried drift fishing for Cod in your area ??
Around the Isle of Wight area it is all anchor and large baits, unless you go out to the channel wrecks where drifting over the wreck with pirks is the method.
On the east coast of Scotland they drift over rough ground for Codling with great success. With a Scottish wife I never miss the chance of fishing when visiting up there. I have been on lots of Charter trips out of Arbroath and some of the smaller ports south of Arbroath in the area down to the Firth of Forth. The boats have always drift fished and I often wondered why we don't do this on the south/west coast of England....or do we.....anyone know why ??

I do it over the Hands Deep area with black feathers. Use more fuel though going back and forth. Had good cod and other stuff. I prefer anchoring though. Less fuel less effort and less snags.

Jed, Thanks for that; I'm now even more determined to give it a go the next time I'm out....when the bloomin weather calms down, which won't be this weekend !!!!
Reckon your right on the snags so I'll set up on a rotten bottom for the hooks, but its got to be worth a try as my area is not producing many Cod this year.

They do it a lot on the Northeast coast for some reason. All the charter boats do it and never anchor. They use white feathers or muppets or pirks or mussel baits.

Some of the skippers out of the south Devon ports will have a go at this. Fished earlier this year on Smuggler out of Exmouth who recommends a short trace with something like a Storm Shad bounced along the bottom. Orange shads seem to be the cod colour and using braid allows you to fish the lure right on the bottom and feel your lead bounce along. With nylon your have to wind up a couple of turns. I do know this is a good method for cod and ling on English channel marks. ;D Trouble is with this method it is not as productive as a long trace and drifting a lure for pollock. Perhaps it could be something that more boat anglers try after they have caught a few good pollock for the table.
