Fished one of the better marks today somewhere in the St Austell area of Cornwall. Alan - you should have come today. ;D Ziggy you have the map for this one!!!! Was a long walk but very much worth it. Fished some surface poppers and sub surface lures but no Bass to be seen. Did see a couple of big Garfish following and taking an interest in the poppers but no takes. Then fished ragworm on the float and had some better results: This was the best fish of the day and I reckon was touching 4lb. The float is 8" long. Lovely gold colouration underneath. The second best fish which was around 3lb. Completely different markings but from the weed in the gulley. Then a few smaller ones and around 9 fish in all. I lost count. Now I know that summer is here. ;D One of my favourite ways to fish and I think wrasse are the carp of the sea. Excellent to catch on light tackle and sport fishing. All fish were returned and all went back down to be caught again. Walk back up was much worse than going down and was very happy to get seated in the car.

It the best fishing you can do in the summer and there are always wrasse about. Now you have started me!! What I use is an old 10ft spinning rod. Think it is an Abu Delta but is too heavy for spinning. A bass or carp rod would be ideal. Med sized fixed spool reel loaded with 10 or 12lb line. Its then a sliding float arrangement fished at about 6ft low water up to maybe 20ft over high. You want to draw the wrasse out of the kelp and up after the baits. You know when you have got it right because you will just be above weed level and the float will not snag up. I like to use a small power gum stop knot on the main line which slides easily through the rings. I have got this little drawing but its a bit small to see viewed here. Right click and save it to "my pictures" and you should be able to see it bigger. A 2 to 3ft hook length in 8lb line allows you to break out of a snag without losing the whole set up. Fish the gulleys very close in and around you feet. Wrasse will be there. When the float goes under lift into the fish and pile on the pressure. They head straight for the kelp when they are hooked. Sometimes its a tug of war to get them out. Some will tell you they bite and hold on to weed and rocks. This maybe true and they have more teeth than the BeeGees. Hope that helps and when its bright and sunny and other fish are not playing have a go at these.
