Got meself a little orkney and outboard but not prepared to go to sea until I have a vhf radio. Getting a fixed and a handheld to be sure to be sure as the seas near me are livly. Now someone has told me that a new vhf doesnt work apart from on the emergency channel as until they are registered. Is this true? What do I need to register it?

Anthony, As far as I know any new VHF radio will work on all channels. However you do need a VHF operators license to use one and you will also require an annual license. To get an operators license you need to complete a short course at an approved centre. You can get more information about these from the RYA on 0845 345 0400.
If you are thinking of purchasing a new 'fixed' VHF set then all small craft VHF radios now on the market must be 'GMDSS compatible' this doesn't mean it's included, you may have to buy the DSC part separately, but is worthwhile thinking about for additional safety.
