Here's a very important number to put in your phone 01407762051. It'll put you in direct contact with an operator at Holyhead Coastguard Maritime Rescue Co-ordination Center (MRCC). You'll get through to the coastguard quicker than 999, cutting out the BT operator etc!!
I think some people are over-optimistic about how far a handheld VHF will transmit in poor conditions. A mobile phone is still important.

Very good point! But make sure you also have a VHF as other boat users in the vicinity won't hear a mobile phone message! Holyhead may not hear the initial distress from a handheld, but other boat users will, and may relay it to Holyhead! And start a rescue themselves. VHS first! and as Glyn says, keep your mobile on, and it may be useful to have that number on speed dial! Cheers, Don't end up as crab food!

Currently, the price of a 2nd hand one is only about £50 cheaper than a new one so you may as well fork out for a new one. Less risk. A few go on e-bay.
