Has anybody out there used chugbugs? Are they any good? Is one colour better than another? Is there a trick to using them?

I spent a lot of time using them, and with good results, colour didn't seem to matter. I have since moved on to the Duel Alie magnet Slider/Yo-Zuri mag popper with even better results www.veals.co.uk/acatalog/Surface.html

I have started to use chug bugs and they work very well (only caught pike on them so far tho!) apparently the trick is to chug then pause for a few seconds every now and then, thats when the fish hits them. Its a good sight to see the fish follow the lure then strike it!

Thanks guys. I had a look at the Veals website & there's a good article about suface poppers (plugs & flies) which explains the principle behind them. It's obvious when you know. I know several places where they should work. I must leave the bait rod at home & realy give the plugs and fly tackle a good go.

Probably the most pleasurable way to fish, even if you blank! It's better than sitting in one spot for 4 hours. Try going at dawn or dusk and watch the sun on the horizon, priceless!!

As for Chug Bugs, I have managed to catch a few, but not many bass on one of these lures. And I lost probably my biggest bass on a lure on one!! For those who are wondering what the hell a Chug Bug is..... They come in all colours and are made by Storm. Just a tip, make sure the hooks are needle sharp

Fester they are made by Rapala now as they bought out Storm a few years ago. I'm not picking just correcting

I have had more luck with these lures catching pike than bass, but i agree, its the best way to spend a fishing trip at a picturesque spot.
Not the best method where blood pressure is concerned. Any wake around the plug and i am almost hopping with anticipation.

They're great.I fish shallow rocky marks and when I fish the chugbug or yo zuri Im still amazed when I get a take.I love the way old spikey swirls around and shakes his head angrily when hes hooked.Surface popping is really great fun.Its not fishing its more than that. its Angling. My techinque for popping.cast ..splash...tighten line... 1)a couple of short sharp turns of the reel (the idea is to create a distubance)2) wait (count to eight) then repeat step one and so on.I always vary the time I wait between chugs and also a small strike of the rod between waiting periods creates a nice disturbance. In short I vary the retrieve.I also keep an eye out for gulls, fry, interesting rocks, eddies anything that could betray old spikey. Most of my takes occur when the bug isnt moving.Look out for swirls, disturbance around the lure.Sometimes they'll hit the lure, get off only to have another go.If you lose one or he isnt hooked keep working the lure.Bass will sometimes follow a lure and take it from under your rod tip so work the lure right in .Keep in contact with the lure (no slack line).Rove about, try different areas.Make sure the drag is set correctly on your reel.
