hello everyone , just registered with the website so this is my first posting !! ( must admit i was one of those guests who liked to read what was going on but not contribute !!! )
Im quite new to sea fishing and all ive really done is go mackerel bashing with a couple of the lads . I am now bored of this and fancy trying a bit of lure fishing . When i told the girlfriends old man this , he said he had an old spinning rod that he used to fish in the local rivers for salmon ( and catch them according to him !!! ) he says it would be fine to use for sea fishing , all i know is that its 7 foot long and it says 10 - 30 grams on it !! does anyone know if this rod would be suitable to use ? (he also gave me a little shakespear fixed spool reel to go with it )

A big welcome to you. It probably has is applications but I would personally go for a 9ft or 10ft spinning rod. You will be able to get a better distance with the lure and will find a medium or heavy spinning rod of this length is packed with power. I use the Berkely Lightening rod in Medium 9ft.

Think I paid about £70 for the Lightening rod with a Shimano Reel. Think the reel is a Shamano Exage and it does very good. Best t get a deal as most shops suppliers will do this. If not try and get a few lures thrown in!!! Cant help you with Welsh Marks to fish but sure others will. Remember that there is a secret society when it comes to giving up bass information.

I use a 9ft Ron thompson Rephlex mate which cost £30 and a Shimano baitcaster which cost about £60 but there are plenty of reels and rods to choose from ;D ;D Ask your local tackle shop mate and they should point you in the right direction

Mike Ladle Surespin 10ft myself, coupled with a semi decent reel your looking around £100-120. However like the shampoo its worth it!

Gaza,
when I first started sea fishing some 40 years ago with my mates, we used 7ft trout spinning rods with small freshwater fixed spool reels and 8 to 10lb line. This setup was ideal with 3/4oz and 1 oz Abu Tobies fishing for mackerel, pollack and bass. I still have the rod and still use it occasionally. The otfit your girlfriends dad has is will give you a lot of fun. Over the years I've tried several spinning rods in the 9 to 10ft length but none have given as much fun and satisfaction as that original rod. Give it a go around Penmon Point or White Beach but keep clear of the weed (it is only 7ft after all).

Hi gaza, you won't go far wrong with Shimano tackle. I've never fished the Caernarfon end of the straits but at a guess I would say anywhere along the Aber foreshore would be suitable. I know the water is reasonably deep close in and if its like everywhere else I've fished then bass will be well within spinning casting distance. Most people make the mistake of casting as far out as possible and ignoring the first 10yds. Good luck. Once you catch you'll be hooked for life.
