Just back from staying 8 nights at Penmon. Beautiful spot and great weather though the fishing was variable. Started off on Saturday with 6 mackerel in an hour when I got there so it was mack for tea. Sunday and Monday not much was showing., just a few mackeral and under sized pollock. Tuesday there was a lot of whitebait close in and loads of launce/sandeels which ignored everything but went mad for small pink shrimp. Tried float fishing and freelining them in the hope of a bass but no luck, though did see someone take a big bass (about 4/5 pound I should think) on a chugbug. Wednesday and Thursday were quiet with just a few mack taken. Friday evening everything just went mad. Had been spinning for about half an hour when I suddenly pulled 4 mack in. Then almost every cast was bringing them in. This went on from about 6 till it went dark. The sea was absolutely boiling with mack and whitebait. Same thing Saturday morning then a strong wind started coming down the Straits and this seemed to drive them out to sea. All in all a very enjoyable week though I still cannot understand why people cannot take their litter home. Place was littered with empty rig packs, beer cans etc. Even found a filleting knife on the rocks - dangerous as there are lots of kids around.

Nice report Nige - glad you caught a good few. Havn't been back over to Penmon for quite a few weeks, and even then I fished a beach mark before the point as the point was full of combat anglers :-) Once this wind calms down I'll give it go with the plugs again - sounds like the bass are starting to take the surface lures at last

Went down there last week and you could hardly move, so went back closer to Beaumaris. Hope they're on the surface at last - I've been plugging away around Lleiniog for a couple of weeks without a glimpse of anything.
Has anyone tried freelining or flies for bass in the Straits?
