Just thought I'd share this weekend's catch with you all. Travelled upto Trevor Pier on Friday night but didnt arrive until late due to work.
On arrival at the pier we were greeted by a group of guys who said 'alright lads, hope you're not after catching anything'. to which I replied 'Ah, we'll be ok, we'll catch loads'. Talk about setting yourself up for a fall.
We finally got a line wet at about 11:00 with the aim of fishing until about 06:00. Fishing was quiet and few bites were had in the first hour or so. We still managed to pull in a few doggies on squid and whitebait baits.
I had no luck on my other rod which was sat in the water with a full sardine flapper (is all we had left in the freezer ).
Continued thru till the morning with about a dozen fish between us (all doggies), with Karen having the better catch with this decent sized fish:-
We travelled upto Dinas Dinlle and kipped for a few hours before driving upto Caernarfon Tackle Centre to get some bait. No ragworm scuppered my plans for Wrasse fishing off Point Lynas. Still, never mind armed with a couple of packs of sandeel, more squid and a couple of packs of lug we headed over to Anglesea Breakwater.
After a puzzling half hour trying to figure how to get a vehicle onto the breakwater we tracked a vehicle back and found the access road.
We drove on to the breakwater about 20:00 and asked about better spots for fishing. After speaking to a nice Scottish guy we decided to fish the harbour side so drove down the second part of the leg about 300 yards before the dogleg to the lighthouse.
In the water for about 20:15 we both put out pennel rigs with squid/sandeel baits and waited. I decided to do a little more float fishing so tackled up and float fished a small 2" piece of ragworm. A couple of small pollock fell to this before I gave up (due to my eyesight being bad).
Went back to concentrating on my main rod, nothing... Hours passed without a single bite, Karen was having the same problem.
About 12:30 with my bait having been in the water for over 20 minutes and reeled in only to discover a doggie on the end. Strange as I hadnt seen my tip register a bite. Baited back up and flung out a fresh sandeel/quid combo, a couple of minutes passed and then a typical doggie bite. Another doggie was landed and in all this time Karen's rod still hadnt registed any interest. Another hour so passed with no bites, then Karen hooked into a doggie, quickly followed by two spider crabs in quick succession, then two more doggies.
With daylight looming and no bites for a while we decided to go take some kip.
Waking at about midday we had breakfast then decided to fish the furthest end of the breakwater near some rocks but after 20 minutes or so we we're pushed back up the rocks onto the breakwater so decided to go and find somewhere else to fish. A leisurely drive round the island led us back onto mainland at which point I decided to go and check out Dinorwic Marina. We used to fish here regularly before they stopped car access!!
Down at the Marina the wind was ripping down the straights and Karen gave up feathering as casting was proving difficult and joined me float fishing in the small Marina.
She was first to catch with a small Blenny (I think). Unfortunately the piccies of this didnt work so had to go off markings etc but she was chuffed to add another species to the list. An hour or so passed with a constant stream of crabs pinching our baits (2" lug tipped with squid). We moved down to the end and fished the mouth into the straights.
I had my first decent bite and after a slight tussle promptly landed a small common eel (again another one for the species list.
All in all not fantastic but hey still had fish at each location, and both of us added to our species list.
Bring on next weekend, off down to South Wales for a spot of smoothhound action.
