fished from low to high yesterday pm, mackerel not abundant, either none or full house. Caught enough for bait, then 4 hours of replacing hooks bitten off by spider crabs.... there must be a million out there. A couple of big bites on fresh mackerel close in but nothing contacted. At high the little silver eels came out to play so I packed up. A pity spider crabs don't eat snotty little eels... or vice versa

I'd love to see a silver eel try to get its mouth around a spider crab! Annoying thing about them spiders is that they give such convincing bites. You really get excited and think there's a fish on. Do you know that in deeper waters they can grow up to 4ft wide? Imagine hooking one of them beasts. Are spider crabs eatable by the way?

they are edible, most caught commercially go to the continental market; the french eat them but then they will eat anything they can stick a fork into, I think it is only the claws which are used. I've just been told by a diving friend of mine that the seabed is carpetted with spider crabs and cast off shells. On the bright side, bass, smoothhound, cod etc eat hardback crabs so they will benefit from the explosion in crab numbers.
