Fished out off Christchurch for the first time this weekend......bloomin excellent. Caught some average wrasse over the rough grounds off Hengistbury Head and then headed east for 2 miles and had approx 50 Black Bream, mostly small, but with the occasional nice fish over a pound. 5 doggies, one small tope (approx 8 pounds) and a tub gurnard. One of the best days inshore I've had in a long time. Does the area always produce that well or did I have a lucky day Does anyone know of some good grounds for smooth hound in that area ?? Cheers - Nick

Don't know about Christchurch, but plenty of smoothounds in Solent. I go out from Lymington, close to ChCh, so you could try there.
The key is crabs: soft, hard, fresh or frozen - i don't know if it matters - all have caught for me. Someone told me rag is good too, but haven't tried it. Only problems current and weed - takes the fight away from the fish.
I am no expert - fairly new to the area and my first year catching smoothounds. i have found shallower water best though. Dawn and daylight OK. not tried night - think its best though.
About ChCh, where is a good launch site? parking? Can you launch at which state of tide? All info appreciated.
See you on ChCh ledges one day!

Launch site I have used so far is Mudeford Harbour; payment for the car park is £7 and if you launch during the daytime they will charge you another £8 !!! So get ther early in the morning and avoid paying to launch. The launch site is very very shallow and not dredged, so a mid to high tide is best and WARNING as you head towards the entrance to the harbour stay right over by the moored boats as there are rocks/gravel bank by the RNLI slipway; head for the round dark coloured channel marker and go to the right of it before turning left out down the harbour way. Also watch out for the sand bank on the right as you exit the harbour - stay in the marked out channel. Is Poole any better for launching

Hi
Don't know about Poole. Need to have a look at low tide i guess, but not popular day out with the wife!.
Might be worth starting a new thread.
Nice bass by the way. Haven't had as much success with them this year as last.

Poole: good ramp at Baiter (close to Poole Quay). Quite flat, so you'll need some hand work or a rope, but heaps of parking and looks fine at low water neaps. Cost = £7.50 inclduing car park for bpat and trailer and Poole harbour fees. gates locked moidnight to 6am, they say.

Thanks Brian, With the weather being rough over the last couple of weeks I have been fishing in Southampton Water; excellent launch site at Cross House Hard (below the Itchen Bridge on the city side), no fees until next month when the parking becomes Pay & Display. The Council Workmen said that the City Liesure Dept may consider some deal for boats/anglers out for long periods, but I don't believe them - money driven councils are rarely generous !!!! See my next report on catches. Cheers - Nick
