Moved to Fairham last May and have enjoyed fishing for mullet and flattys but winter now aproaching and cod season starting so where should I go to catch cod from this region from the shore and when does it kick off?

Sorry, can't help much (Hurst shingle bank? Gilkicker point?)
Same question, except i have a small boat - 2 miles south of the Needles with 3lb of lead isn't really on the agenda.

Thanks Brian. I'm sure someone with knowledge will point us tight. I know the solent isn't a reputed cod mark but there must be cod somewhere in it when winter comes.

Gilkicker point seems to be recommended, but there might be marks further East. Hurst shingle is a definite, but a long way from you perhaps. Strong tides on the ebb. Fish near the castle or at the point generally best, I am told. Be prepared to wait..... and good luck.

Studying at Soton uni and residing at Hedge End. My apologies. I didn't realise the forum demanded such accuracy

i admit to spelling it like that sometimes as well and i've lived in nearby southsea for 3 yrs now. i have however stopped spelling portsmouth as portsmaff as some locals pronounce it although the really local locals call it pompey.

I guess if I told you what we in Southampton call Portsmouth the moderator would delete this.
(Joke, honest)

hi guys, for boat fishing the cod are in the solent area I had a 14.5lber on sat, we also had conger rays whiting and the usual pout and dogs, south of the nab, for the shore angler it seems to be all going on at gilkicker with codling and whiting being taken at night plus the odd bass.

Thanks for that. I'll ear mark it for the weekend. I love Gilkicker as a venue anyway. What would you say are the best baits?
