Had my first whiting and codling today near the hovercraft launch at Gosport. Codling were only small but the whiting were 2lb ers. Bait was rag. Also had a plaice.

Excuse my ignorance, but I think I got some whiting in boat off Brambles. They were darkish upper, had orange brown spots, more coddish colour but whiting shape, sharp teeth, no barbule. Is that right? Last whiting for me in UK was 25+ years ago and don't remember spots - silver, with grey uppers.
Rumour has it some (8) cod cought by boat in inner Solent.
Need to buy warmer clothing....

It's at Lee-On-Solent, between Gosport and HillHead. It's next to the old Naval Fleet Airarm Airfield, on the western end of Lee' beach front. The water is shallow close in, so I guess the reported Cod were caught from a boat off shore. As a kid I did lots of fishing in that area of the Solent and the best shore mark for Cod was at Gilkicker Point, casting out into what we thought was a deep hole. I'm not sure how deep it is off Gilkicker, but perhaps a boat owner with sonar fishfinder can answer this for us ?? I never personally caught any Cod there, but I do know friends who have; never bigger than 7Lbs. Cheers - Nick

Thanks for that. It tells me a lot about the place, not least exactly where it is. I may give it a miss if its a shallow venue though as my casting isn't brilliant. Gilkicker sounds good though.
