What can I catch at Fairham near Portsmouth? Fishing there with a mate next week but never been before. What should I expect? What sort of venue is it?

Hi Nobby, Are you fishing from the beach/shore or in a boat ?? The area you are talking about is an estuary at the far end of Portsmouth Harbour. I haven't fished there since I was a young lad, but from the shore your likely to get plenty of small flounder and small Bass. In a boat in the main channel then better (but still small) Bass. If your friend knows the area then personally I would go to a small island, which as kids we called Rat Island (not sure of it's real name, may be Whale Island, but don't quote me on it. It's on the northern edge of Gosport (4-5 miles from Fareham) and you fish the channel going into one of the creeks. When my wife gets back with my car (need the map book) I will post you the grid reference. It produces more and better Bass and lots more flatties. If your in a boat then better still because you can fish the deeper channels around the harbour. Good luck... Nick

aaaah that reference to whale island brings back memories of my navy days. did my training there and went through hell but had some fun as well. i guess the military security keeps the netter away?

Marcus, I am thinking of the Island over by where the Foudroyant was moored !!! Just checked on the Ornance Survey website...it's called Burrow Island, on the other side of the harbour to the bit of the naval dockyard where Victory is in dry-dock. Burrow Island my ar$e, we called it Rat Island; a much better name ;D Nobby, Anyway, how did you get on at Fareham Cheers - Nick

Not bad. Lots of slippery sliding in mud Loads of flounder sport though. Really enjoyed it. I didn't enjoy having to clean the mud off my tackle when I got home though.

Hi Nobby, Pleased to hear that you caught plenty of flounder...what size did they go to And what average size ?? I haven't fished there for years and you have given me a taster for going back some time I gain from your reference to the mud that you were not in a boat. Cheers - Nick
