Well so much for the weather forecast of light winds and clear skys Apart from the rain, high winds and the large trawler passing back and forth, hoovering the fish out by the ton (grrrrrr), there were still plenty of fish for rod and line in the Needles area. Baits and tactics - three rods; two straight down and one uptider, fishing squid, squid and rag cocktail and mackrel respectively. I was the first boat out at 7am and straight away I was into nice size Whiting and plenty of big Pouting, mostly falling to squid and rag cocktails. The squid alone was pretty quiet, but was my great hope for a Cod....and hope it remained !!!! The uptider was my treat to myself; a new ABU Suveran 4-8oz with the retractable butt. I seriously recommend this rod, you twist and pull to extend the butt for casting and then twist and push the butt into the handle thus turning it into a boat rod style handle for retrieving the tackle/fish. Very clever and much more control when playing the fish - well it pleased me The mackrel caught the usual Dogfish and some of the larger Whiting, but dissapointingly no Thornbacks. A chap at Mudeford Harbour was telling me that one of the charter boats had come in with 4 Cod, but I didn't see any caught on the boats around me. Has anyone seen a Cod come out of the western end of the Isle of Wight yet
