Cod on my boat – at last
Took Brian’s advice (cheers mate) and fished south/south east of the Needles, about 1 mile off the Isle of Wight, in 27 meters of water. The current is strong but the fishing is excellent.
Two recent trips have produced two Cod: the first just over 12 pounds and the second 26 pounds – fantastic !!
Lost a third fish after playing it to near the surface after about 15 minutes of battling. Is it just me or does everyone agree that they have a characteristic head knocking through the rod as you fight them in ?? nothing else seems to give the same type of fight.
Needless to say I was gutted at losing a third fish, but that’s fishing for you
Also caught a reasonable Thornback and plenty of Whiting and Dogfish.
All fell to squid baits and nothing on mackerel; except Doggies. My first fish was on a standard 30lb boat rod, with braid and 2lb of lead, so heavy work, especially in the current out there. The second fish came on the uptider with 20lb line, so the fight was truly magical and took about 25 minutes to boat. The only problem being keeping bottom with the uptider in the height of the tidal rush; but well worth the effort.
Both trips I cruised over and spoke to Wight Rebel (charter boat) and on each occasion he had two Cod on board: 28lb, 26lb and two fish around 15lb. One of his customers also had a decent Thornback being weighed and a another was pulling in a Conger whilst I was there.
On Saturday (27th Nov) there were a number of Charter Boats in the area 3 miles south/southeast of the Needles, off Atherfield Point area and they were getting Cod according to Wight Rebel.
I also spoke to a boat in the Solent off Lymington and he had a 16 pound Cod, but two other boats in the Solent, between Lymington and Cowes had no joy, just Whiting and Doggies.
