Meant to mention in my last post; the big Cod that I caught had huge bite marks on both of its flanks. They didn’t seem symmetrical like you would get from a shark, but a bit haphazard and were healing. Anyone any idea what is big enough to take chunks out of a 26 pound Cod ?? I will try and get a photo put on the site to show the detail. The thought of using a big Cod as live bait never crossed my mind Happy fishing - Nick

:-Xa friend of mine who runs a charter boat from newhaven used to fish on trawlers in the channel and got to see all sorts of lovely fish that only appear in animal life encyclopedias or ''dont exist in our waters''[ acording to the uk tourist trade board a very powerfull lobby' be carefull' ] if the bites where dog bite sized then probably a seal or two getting a bit territorial but if you are saying that these 'bites may be saucer sized then i will leave that up to you and your imagination[ i expect you will have a vision of a large migratory ''short finned fish'' of some sort see what you mako of that, hard to belive but i have no reason to disbelive my pal as he isnt a member of parliment. spooky

Love the suggestions...seems to me that the most pausible is a large marine mammal...but frightening that they would attempt to take such sizable prey. can't say that I have even seen a Seal around the Isle of Wight, but have seen a few Dolphin, but I thought their teeth patterns are more regular....in a row like fish. These were all over the shop like a dog bit...so I guess a seal looks favourite.
If we keep this thread alive eventually some knowledgeable sole will come up with the answer; or we may have to accept that we have floundered on this one!.....so before we plaice it in the delete box lets jkeep asking :-)
