Solent off Calshot, Cowes and Lepe Beach areas.
Well I managed to get out on Saturday and the weather was glorious; got a bit choppy in the afternoon but still a pleasant day out on the boat. Only problem was the lunatics in yachts who seemed to be depriving some village of its idiot for the day. I had two near misses whilst at anchor, with one of the yachts coming to within 15 feet of my bow, briefly hitting my anchor rope, whilst he was being pushed towards me sideways by the tide. He didn’t appreciate the names I was calling him, but then I didn’t appreciate the fact that he came close to sinking me. Luckily for him I couldn’t jump 15 feet or I would have taken my complaint to another level !!!
As for the fishing it was a bit patchy….not a mackerel to be had so I was grateful that I had taken some squid from the freezer and purchased some ragworm. I caught two small bream and a handful of doggies, but the days fun came from 5 smooth hound all around the 5-7 pound mark. All were taken in 15 meters of water as the tide eased off either side of slack water.
Is it just me or is the seaweed a nightmare at the moment ??
The weed made fishing at anchor a pain, so I would only recommend anchoring up when the tide slackens off.
I finished the trip off with 8-10 small shoal bass off Cal shot spit in the shallow water (2-3 meters), all caught spinning a toby lure. Good quick action fun with the gulls showing the movement of the fish over the sand banks. Best fish was around 2 pounds.
