Hi fellow anglers...hope your fishing weekend went better than mine
I took my neighbour out on the boat and was totally tanked by him. The best I could manage to boat was some pouting and dogfish. He gets a 12 pound Cod and a 47 pound Conger !!!!!!!
So he gets his biggest fish ever and his best ever Cod, so I’m pleased to have been a party to the joy.
The Conger was the great fun, it snapped him off the first time and then whilst he was retackling that rod I shouted for him that his second rod was going mad.....this time the eel wasn't so lucky and came to the boat with both sets of tackle in its mouth. I was pleased; I had put all the bells and whistles on those traces.
Whilst I was then engaged sorting his conger I asked him to keep an eye on my rods for me; at the same moment I glanced around and as if to seek reassurance and in time to see one of my rods being pulled right over, the tip in the water. The rod rest was twisted on its mounting and close to collapse. We both dived at the rod and stopped it being lost…phew !!
I started playing the fish and after seconds the braided line parted at the knot…..grrrrr
Totally devastated I retackled and carried on. I waited patiently for another hour until the rod thumped again and once again I was into a reasonable fish, only to be cheated again by the line parting; this time the 130 pound trace line had snapped on the length where the sliding ledger was. I don’t want to repeat my language but my disappointment was highly vocal.
I mean what are the chances of getting two consecutive fish break you off like that. The traces were brand new and I had made them from gleaming new bits….how can you break 130 Lb nylon that easily !!!??
I can only guess that a kink in the line at some part of the day had weakened the nylon trace. Still I wasn’t alone in having the braid break on me, my guest lost a further fish with braid snapping.
I love and hate braid, it cuts through the water with ease, but the knots are either super strong or fail at the weight of a kitten, why is this. I follow the rules on the knots and still I get break offs. At one point I got caught in the bottom as the boat swung around after slack water and could I get it to snap…not a hope, the knot was pulling the boat along against the slow current; awesome if it had been doing the same for a fish.
The best fish of the day went to the chap I saw at Lymington off one of the charter boats; a 30 lb plus Cod. I didn’t hear the exact weight, as the crowd were milling around to marvel at the awesome sight of this monster fish. Made his weekend no doubt and one for the album.
My turn next time…… maybe
