Well I couldn't resist getting out off the back of the Isle of Wight for one last go before Christmas....desperate for a Cod !!!
I caught 7 Conger, three over 30 lb and the biggest around 40 pound.....but not a Cod in sight. Spoke to several other anglers out on small boats and the story was much the same with no Cod anywhere, either inside the solent or off the Needles.
I went right down passed St Catherines Point this time, trying new ground (for me) and anxious to find a Cod.
Still I can't complain too much I landed a 10 pound Thornback and a 6 pound Bass, as well as the Conger, which give the usual thrashing fight at the start and end, with not a lot in the middle.
I moved location only twice during the trip and found that the Conger came on within a short time of arriving at each location. I reckon as the area isn't fished much by the charter boats that the Conger have been left to grow. All I know is that if I had moved location four times I would probably have boated 12 or more of the things.
I reckon that when the Bass and Cod are away and things go a bit slow between February and June then I know where I'm going for some rod bending fun, even if it is just big eels.
PS: all the Conger were released without being dragged out of the water, so they are as health as I found them and I reckon that it guarentees us all sport for the future.
Speaking to the boats doing the Needles thay were getting plenty of small rays. The guy who was fishing off Lymington in the Solent said that he had a number of small Bass in the 2-2 1/2 pound range and a few Whiting.
Cheers- Happy new Year to everyone; and good fishing
