I've been contacted by someone who has begun manufacturing the professional sea fishing kayak that's used in South Africa. It's new over here, so new in fact it doesn't yet have a name. They're bringing one to the kayak meet for anyone to try out. We'll quite literally be trying a kayak before everyone else in the UK has even seen it. You can see more at www.nwsa.ukf.net/kayak/newdesign/kayak.htm

My main liking for it is the double fin on the keel which makes better tracking. I'm not sure about fibreglass instead of plastic though. I can't wait to try it on 4th Feb. It's only 11ft long so easy to paddle and easy to manouvre yet those rear fins make it track as good as a 15ft yak.
Another interesting point is that the rear fins are the same as the ones on a surfboard which is what makes them head shorewards in the surf instead of weaving sideways and then over. Anyone who's tried to bring a kayak in on a surf will know what I'm talking about. This also aplies for stability in a following sea.

Tried it today at the meet, got on it, fell off it , got back on and, you guessed it, fell off again . Came off in the surf and got my foot stuck in the foot straps, didn't like that . I'm sure that when you've mastered it you could have lots of fun in the surf. I dont think you could get much fishing done on it though, not very stable at all, probably like straddling a beer barrel and trying to fish off that ;D Its not for me

I'll bring my Dorado for you to try at one of the meets - knocks a Stealth into a cocked hat. The Stealth racing kayaks are phenomenal machines (like the Mirage, but better) but these surf rescue ski derivatives are not as useful for FISHING off in the UK - they are pretty exposed. The build quality is very good and I know Tim and Jason will produce them to the best with top of the range materials, but the design is not as "friendly" as some others. If you want to see some other types - go and have a look at www.kayak.co.za and see the Kaskazi range. There you will see my Dorado and the Pelican - both sit-on-tops with serious touring capabilities. The Dorado only loses out 10% to a proper expedition kayak! The fish box is HUGE - it needs to be when you are targetting 60lb + tuna and want to bring them back in for the braai. Towing a big fish lashed to the side of the kayak is no fun - you simply cannot paddle with the drag created.

The prices confuse me. 6750 for a pelican. Is that dollars? And how many pounds is that? What are the yaks made of (it doesn't say)?

That'll be South African Rand, 6750 Rand is about £562.19 at todays exchange rate. For more details on the Kaskazi range and details of how they are made. www.kayak.co.za/kaskazi/SM

That is your opinion, and and is true of the old Stealth Yak - like the one they had on the weekend. However the new models make the Dorado look a tad "Old Fashioned" slow and clumsy. The BFS 2006 is "THE KAYAK" to have in South Africa right now.........end of story. www.stealthpp.co.za/Products.asp?product=1Regards Zulu
