with spring already on our doorstep and summer just round the corner, hopefully the kayak fishing will start hotting up ;D to that end i think a meet to practice self rescue, partner rescues, towing techniques and so on would be a good idea. among us there are some experienced kayakers and some inexperienced too so i think everyone would learn something. some of the ideas and techniques Ive seen on a sea kayaking dvd and i think we can use the same methods with the sit on tops. i plan on getting out at the beginning of April on some flat water to practice so if anyone wants to join me, the more the merrier ;D.
i will post a date nearer the time. martin ;D ;D

up to now ive had 41 visits to this thread and no replies, i would like to think that people take this seriously, i do, thats why ive put this up to offer. i like to think that im paddling with people that know what to do in an emergency situation, i dont confess to being an expert in all thing kayaking, ive not been doing it long, this is why i put this thread up so we can get together and learn off eachother, because there is a wealth of experience on this forum. myself and georgieb will be having a practice and refresher day at some point and it would be nice for a few more of you guys to have some input, so please let me know if anyone is up for it so i can get a date sorted. martin

Hi Martin
I think its an excellent idea..too far away for me to come unfortunately. I'll be havng a practice session when new yak arrives. I'm looking to get a new tow rope and a throw line - hopefully my friend Zzippy will come along and we can try a few things out.

hello martin put me down for that an hour of practice could save your life .everybody should practice re-entry at least every couple of months i do. i also think towing another yak and using your through line should be practiced (martin your line is still in the boot of my car ).

I'd be up for a bit of splashing about. Had to do a bit of a forced capsize the other day (last saturday) at Benllech. I was practising in the surf (proper surf with striong North Easterlies) and the wind was beginning to push me into the sea wall as the tide was right in, so I just had to go for it side on until it washed me over, which didn't take long. Luckily it is relatively shallow there, but by the time I got back to dry land I was the most knackered that I can ever remember being in all my life, puking, hyperventilating and all. It was interesting, but it goes to show you how easily things can go wrong and how one or two decisions should possibly be re-thought . It probably didn't help having a skin full the night before though.

I was in almost exactly the same situation as you tabasco a few months ago, same symptoms just a different venue. I have been a physical worker all my life and i was surprised by how quickly i became exhausted to the point of illness in a set of wrong conditions- tide, building sea and growing off-shore wind against me. To safely kayak in the sea as anglers needs a basic grasp of many skills - seamanship, H&S at sea, meteorology as well as personal judgement skills of which there are many (knowing your limits and not pushing your luck are 2).Some risks have already been taken recently. How would we all feel if bad news came on this forum. Regular safety practise needs to be as much a part of this as the enjoying and the angling bit as Zebra mentioned earlier. Everyone can get something from a meet like this . All we need is some ideas for a date and venue and folks to participate.

Hi martin Talking of DVDs there are two i bought over the past year. They are called This is the sea and This is the sea 2. They are nothing to do with fishing or sit on tops but the top yakker Justine Kergenven takes you on a world tour of venues and kayakers its something else. It goes to show what a kayak can do and i think to some extent what we could do with our sit on tops. The DVD covers different aspects such as surfing, touring, tidal races (anglesey) and expeditions. Its worth a look.

Hi Martin I bought them from Brookbank in stockport they have got a good sellection as well as books. The title of one book i got for christmass is called Song of the paddle, its canoing in the Rockies and Alaska in an open top canoe, not my type of paddling but its the spirit of the adventure that grabs me.

Talking of safety and the learning of techniques I have recently been contacted by a company who are working on a Techniques and Safety course aimed at kayak fishermen, I've been asked along to attend the course on the Press day, will let you know more about it as I get details. SM
