There is an article in this months Paddle Magazine that may be of interest to some of you, an article on paddling the Menai Straits finishing at Puffin Island, gives information on the tides and timings for the paddle and areas that are safe get outs if in trouble. Plus a few spots for playing in (without your fishing tackle). SM

DODGY AREA, especially when its ebbing, been fishing there for years (on shore) and have seen lots of people struggling in this dangerous place.
PLEASE DONT TRY IT ,IF YOU DONT KNOW WHAT YOU ARE DOING......

Around the Gallows point area may be ok but I don't think I'd like to go near Puffin Island. That's where the tide from the straits clashes into the tide from the open sea. I've even seen charter boats struggling there.

was talking to one of the young lads at brooksbank when i was last there, he said he paddled the tide out between the two bridges in the straits in one of those daft littkle yaks the size of a washing up bowl, reccons he did bridge to bridge in just over 10 mins, suicidal if you ask me, i dont think id ever attempt the straits in a kayak, gallows point would probably be my limit, its asking for an early grave

It's worth reading the article, I agree with everything you say and have heard stearn warnings about the straits, but it's a very interesting article and covers some of the areas that you guys paddle and launch, they use the tidal system to their advantage and point out that if you are late getting to a spot on route they give bail out marks. Hi Terry Cant remember were you live but if you have a Borders book shop near you they will have it and many more titles to boot. I bought one the name slips me, not much in the way of script but boy the photography said everything, cost me £8 but worth it . The kind of stuff you get their you wouldn't find in your local newsagents.
A contractor in my place of work seen me reading a yak mag and began telling me of the straits and his kayak training at that location. I'll give him the desk lamp in the face treatment to find out more and get back to you.
