Great discussion this is what forums are for .we are all here to help each other .
I don’t think people are scared or have a phobia of night fishing.
I think people are just being realistic and realising there capabilities.
With the exception of one ore two people on the forum all the rest have not had there kayaks for 10 months yet and with all due respect don’t have the necessary experience in kayaking to do a competent safe night fish .it is easy to confuse confidence with competence but I do think in a well sheltered shallow bay it would be a good idea to have a go and gain experience in night kayak fishing and when the weather and sea temps warm up a bit I hope we can arrange a few night sessions in a bay or sheltered cove and maybe tent and some food and a drink with a bit of luck chrish can come along and give us some tips .
There are 4 main stages of experience in a fishing kayak its not a macho or pansy thing .from my observations with all respect most on this forum are at level 1 or 2 assess yourself be honest .
Stage 1
You get your boat and learn to paddle and control it
Practice a few safety drills and try a bit of surfing and fishing and enjoy getting thrown out
Stage 2
You are able to paddle and control your kayak with ease
And fish from it your awareness of safety gear is heightened and you start to get all the kit together But a day out is more about kayaking than a fishing you tend to paddle like you are in a race.
Stage 3
You have become very aware of your safety and the safety of others around you
You have all the safety gear and can use it properly you notice small things like better ways to stow your gear a safe place to put your fillet knife ect and you realise you can take a break from paddling and have a look around.
Step 4
The safety issues are eased as you have become quite expert in what you are doing you are aware .you relax and enjoy your fishing knowing you have developed the skills to extricate yourself or others in most situations should they arise a day out is now about catching fish .
