Found this place that sells Marine VHF Handhelds with garauntee for as little as £39.00. Used of course so may have a scratch or two but work well with money back garuntee. I'd strongly urge those without a VHF to give it a look. Visit shorterlink.co.uk/5302

They're ex-police radios that have been retuned to all the marine channels and in excellent working order. Downside is that they don't have an automatic channel 16 button (although the do have ch16) and they don't have dual watch. Having said that, if you can't afford to pay much for a VHF, one of these is much better than no VHF at all (which is what too many yakkers have). Oh, one other plus point about them is they're very tough and will take a lot of abuse (that's the radios not the police)!

most boats have their vhf on while they are on the water on 16, and if they hear a call that is not answard by the coastguard in a minuate of that call they will call the coast guards and relay messages both ways, and if the call is from their arear they will also come to see if they can help. law of the sea'
