Any advice on this and has anyone found any good deals on third party and Fire / theft for a Kayak. Just spoke to my local resevoir and they say I need it to launch my kayak. I have emailed the BCU about membership as I understand this includes some insurances.

I got asked this by a lake near me. What a ridiculous concept, what damage are you going to do to a 3rd party with a kayak? Well, this place in question also hired out kayaks so I asked if these were insured 3rd party. Nope! So.....the insurance thing was a way of saying we want you to hire a kayak off us for £20 per hour rather than use your own for £3 for the whole day. I just scanned my home ins doc and changed 'home' into 'kayak' and they accepted it without question. They looked very surprised and addmitted I was the first one to ever turn up with one. Guy behind the counter said he didn't realise there was such a thing as kayak ins! Hang on a mo, this is the same guy who's asking yakkers to produce ins or they can only use the hired yaks.

This was a South West Water Authority Resevoir and they state that third party insurance is required. It started me thinking and I came up with this example - " your paddling back into the surf and you lose it. The Kayak flips and a rolls and hits a third party in the water, perhaps a small child." Surely this could result in a claim, we all know the culture we live in now! I have read up on this and the BCU membership for £29.75 offers and includes a third party insurance, It also gives you an automatic British Waterways License which is apparantly needed on many river systems. See www.ukriversguidebook.co.uk/insurance.htm for further inormation. There is a company on there called NW Brown who will tailor a policy to your individual needs. I contacted them and now have the following: Thrid Party Insurance. Personal Injury/ life Insurance for myeself. up to £15k Fire and theft (theft from transport (roof rack) or at home and tailored exactly to where I store) - New for old for paddle, kayak etc. Policies seem to start from as little as £32.5 and go up to around £60. May be worth reading up as having this has got to be benefitial.

British Waterways is canals only, not rivers.
