I have seen on the packaging of some of my plugs references to a style of plugging known as walking the dog
Does anyone know what this entails? Has anyone used it and found it makes a difference? Are there any good video clips of it being shown anywhere on the World Wide T'internet?
Many thanks

I am probably 100% wrong but is ths where you cast, take a step to the side and work the lure in. You then repeat the process and gradually move along the shore line or mark.
Hence walking the dog.
I am probably 100% wrong and will be corrected.

Have you seen a dog on a lead when he sniffs from side to side? Some lures when 'Twitched' will move left to right right to left. But you need to work the lure with your rod tip, not all lures can do this style. Best used with a pause between retrieve.

Now that sounds like it and as I said thought I would be 100% wrong.

Not my words but may help again. Stickbaits are usually retrieved with a method called 'walking the dog'. Because of it's construction and subsequent balance (there is usually a small weight inserted at the rear) they will move with an alternating side-to-side motion when retrieved with short, sharp jerks. Use a rod with a fairly fast action as this will give you better control over twitching the lure quickly. This action is highly provocative to predators of the larger sizes which can often be seen to bulge the water just prior to the take (make sure that you wait until the fish actually grabs your lure before striking). In order to affect the action as little as possible, use as light a wire as you can get away with. Too heavy a wire trace and swivel will make your lure dip destroying or impairing the desired action.

What type of lure does walking the dog refair to, is it diving lures or surface lures. I have always thought it was the ones which skipped across the surface like the Rapala Skitter walker or popper. I'm confused now?.

Hi Mate, Walking the dog lures are surface lures that are one piece, usually with a few bearings inside that aid in casting and help create the side to side action. Here is one example........ They are not like surface poppers, as they have a smaller snout that creates less of a pop and spurt, but more of a side to side injured fish motion See how the snout is less pronounced than a popper. This is the sort of action it creates when the rod tip is twitched.... Hope this helps a bit. Cheers
