I'm going to try fishing using lures in the Straits tonight up to high tide between Brynsiencyn and Abermenai. Have just got myself a dexter wedge and a rapala J13. Will be using an Odessa rod (not ideal I know). Never tried this properly before. Has anybody got any tips?

HI osh. I have never lure fished that section, only bottom fished it. The big hole there is VERY dangerous to get back from as you know. I have the same rod and it does cast 28gm or more quite well. I use Fireline; 20lb BS and they fly out. But - the J13 is not very heavy and in any sort of breeze, just doesn't get out there. The J11's are very light giving double the casting problem on heavy rods. I have used a bubble float to effect to get the wieght up and that works. The downside is that tangles are frequent unless the bubble is slightly lighter than the lure. I have just ordered a few of those French Ballrag 'floats' I posted about. See if they work out better. A 'tippier' lighter rod will certainly help the lure action and increase casting range. Do I need to mention "watercraft" is all important . . . if you are after mackeral LOL.

Thanks Donald. I'll probably concentrate on using the dexter. Forgot to say, I got a storm lure as well - wild eye or something. Slightly heavier than the J13. Not very hopeful, but tired of catching doggies all the time. Malc in Beaumaris said there was a sewer pipe down by the stables from Dwyran that can be fished from. Does anybody know where this is?

I had a brief look around that bit of coast a week ago - quite a bit of weed around the shore. I had a few casts with a chug bug floating lure on a light spinning rod, which went out about as far as a J13 - wanted to see if the current would take it further out on the ebb - but didnt have much time to play. I might try there on Friday on the ebb as am planning a day off work, so please let us know how you get on. I went out briefly last night back to the wqest coast beach where i got my first silver one last Sunday - but blanked - tide was on the turn and no surf at all, plus I only had 30 mins of light left and don't like playing on rocks on my own in the dark! Happy hunting.

No joy. Like you say, lots of weed around the shore. Was having to peel the weed off the lures after each retrieve. Good spot though otherwise, but all I have caught there is dogfish.

Thanks for info - I think I might go Mackeral bashing on my day off tommorrow - unless the wind whips up enough to justify trying a west coast beach again.
